Original Flow Domain:

The original flow domain for an axis-symmetric geometry is shown below. This flow domain was determined to be insufficient for the guarantee of flow capture which resulted from a supersonic flow solution. The original flow domain is identified by the blue line, and the new domain has been expanded with a conic developed with the REDIST operator.

2D Grid To Expand for Flow Capture

As it stands, the grid is not usable. Several operations are needed to improve the grid quality, including the following:
Trans-Finite interpolation to initialize a subdomain;

Initialzed Expanded Region

Hermite Vector Interpolation (HVI) with the SMOOTH command to smooth the interface into the new subdomain;

HVI Smoothed Interface to Expanded Region

Redistribution of the grid to eliminate stretching issues;

Redistributed Grid at Interface

and Parametric Re-Mapping (PRM) with the BLEND command to further smooth the interface region;

Final Smooth Operation with Parametric Re-Mapping

Although all operations were used, not all of them are required. The VGM software does not require a specific method to smooth a grid. Rather, the user may make up their own methods because the commands can work in concert with one another.
